Instructions for Authors > For Authors and Reviewers > Instructions for Authors

Family and Environment Research (Fam. Environ. Res., FER) is a quarterly peer-reviewed journal of home economics. Manuscripts may cover official business of the Korean Home Economics Association (KHEA) and results of new and original research, dealing primarily with food and nutrition, clothing and textiles, children and families, family resources and consumption, and housing. Manuscripts are received with the understanding that the research reported was conducted within the human subject research with family environments and use policy of the KHEA (see Submission Guidelines) and according to applicable national laws. All manuscripts will be submitted for peer-review to the Editor, who will assign it to a selected member of the Editorial Review Board, and independent outside review.

I. Research and Publication Ethics

All manuscripts submitted to FER should abide by research and publication ethics policies of Instruction for Authors. For issues not addressed here, the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE; http://publicationethics.org/resources/guidelines) should be followed. Papers should be contributed to FER along with a letter verifying that the authors have not committed plagiarism (including self-plagiarism), or duplicate publication, and have not manipulated or used fraudulent data (refer to the template of Author's confirmation regarding research ethics in the Brief Instructions for Manuscript Submission on the website). The journal uses 'CrossCheck' to check for plagiarism in submitted manuscripts.

1. Originality and Duplicate Publication

Manuscripts submitted to FER should not have been published in any other domestic or international academic journal or non-academic publication, and should not be simultaneously submitted to another journal for consideration. If it is found that a manuscript has been submitted simultaneously to FER and another journal or that duplicate publication has occurred, the author(s) will be notified and sanctions will be imposed.

2. Conflict of Interest Statement

The corresponding author must inform the editor of any potential conflicts of interest that could influence the authors' interpretation of the data. Examples of potential conflicts of interest are financial support from or connections to pharmaceutical companies, political pressure from interest groups, and academically related issues. In particular, all sources of funding applicable to the study should be explicitly stated. Any such potential conflicts of interest should be stated on the manuscript title page.

3. Authorship

Each person listed as an author should meet all of the following requirements: 1) substantial contributions to conception and design, acquisition of data, or analysis and interpretation of data; 2) drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content; and 3) final approval of the version to be published. Authors should meet these 3 conditions. Anyone who has simply assisted with acquiring funding for the research, has performed rote data collection, or has provided general administrative guidance with the research process should not be listed as an author, but can instead be thanked in the Acknowledgments section.

4. Privacy of Human Subjects

Information on the identities of individuals (names, photos, etc.) who have participated in research should not be published in any form. Whenever any personally identifiable information has been collected, informed consent must have been provided voluntarily by the research participants. It must be stated in the manuscript that informed consent has been provided for relevant research methods.

II. Copyright

The Korean Home Economics Association holds the copyright of all manuscripts published in FER. Written consent to the transfer of copyright must be submitted through online submission system. It is the authors' responsibility to obtain permission to use the content of tables and figures that have previously been published. The authors are thus liable for any problems with copyright infringement.

III. Submission & Peer Review Process

1. Qualifications for Manuscript Submission

All authors, including the corresponding author, must be members of the KHEA, and any researchers throughout the world can submit a manuscript if the scope of the manuscript is appropriate.

2. Contribution Guidelines

  • Manuscript submission: All manuscripts should be submitted through online submission system (http://submission-fer.khea.or.kr) (refer to the Brief Instructions for Manuscript Submission on the website).
  • Publication agreement: The society holds sole copyright for the articles published in FER. Written consent to transfer copyright must be submitted in advance of publication (refer to the template of Statement of Copyright Transfer in the Brief Instructions for Manuscript Submission on the website).
  • After the manuscript has been submitted, the first and corresponding authors cannot be changed without a specific reason. In addition, co-authors cannot be added or removed. After manuscript submission, if the status of any author must be changed (adding to, removing from, or reordering the list of authors), all of the authors must sign agreement and written permission must be sought from the Editor-in-Chief.
  • A degree candidate may submit a thesis or dissertation as a co-author with the advising professor. However, if the degree candidate has co-advisors, or if the published thesis or dissertation will list more than one advising professor, then all the advisors may be listed as co-authors of the journal manuscript. Likewise, if more than one degree candidate worked cooperatively on the research project, they may all be listed as co-authors. When a thesis or dissertation project has been submitted as a journal article for publication, a footnote must be included on the title page to this effect, and the degree candidate must be listed as the first author, e.g., "This article was a part of Gil Dong Hong's master's thesis [or doctoral dissertation] submitted in 2012."
  • Copyright permission must be obtained from the original author when the submitted paper contains previously published data or data in press or unpublished data or information obtained through personal communication.
  • A reviewing fee of 60,000 Korean Won (or US$60) must be submitted along with original manuscripts. Authors who wish to submit a paper again for reconsideration after an initial rejection must pay an additional reviewing fee. All papers are published with an English title, abstract, tables, and figure legends, and authors are required to pay for English editing by a native speaker.
  • Additional questions may be directed by email to the editorial office.
    Tel: +82-2-561-6416, Fax: +82-2-562-2999, E-mail: khea6416@daum.net

3. Review and Acceptance

  • Once an manuscript has been received by the Editorial Board, it will first be examined to determine that it has been typewritten and conforms to the “Instruction For Authors“ and whether it fits within the scope of the journal. For qualifying papers, the author(s) will then be informed of receipt of the paper and the manuscript will be assigned a manuscript identification number. Manuscripts that do not meet the submission guidelines will be returned to the authors without undergoing review. Manuscripts that enter the review process will be sent to three peer reviewers according to their areas of expertise, proceeding according to the FER guidelines for manuscript review (see the ‘Guidelines for Manuscript Reviews’ on the website).
  • In the review process, the manuscript will be considered on the basis of the clarity of the research topic and objectives, appropriateness of research methods, relevance of the findings, appropriateness of the analysis, the validity and logic of the investigation, and compliance with research ethics guidelines. The manuscript review will be conducted entirely anonymously.
  • After the reviewers' decision on whether to publish the manuscript, the Editorial Board retains the right to withdraw the manuscript from publication if it is found that the authors have not complied with the submission guidelines. Submitted manuscripts will not be returned to the authors. According to the editorial policy of the Editorial Board, if necessary, the authors may revise the paper to the extent that it does not affect the originally submitted content.
  • Even after the publication, if it is revealed that a manuscript is associated with plagiarism, duplicate publication, or data manipulation in violation of the authority of the journal, the publication of the manuscript will be retracted and this will be publicized without the consent of the author(s).

IV. Preparation of the Manuscript

1. General Guidelines

  • Manuscripts should be double-spaced in 11 point font in a Hangul (HWP) or MS Word (DOC/DOCX) file.
  • Units should be expressed according to the International System of Units (SI).
  • Manuscripts written in Korean must minimize the use of English terminology in the text. If no proper Korean translation of terminology, proper names, and units exists, the words may be used in the original language. If a Korean translation exists but the meaning would be unclear to readers, it may be defined in English in parentheses only upon its first appearance in the text, and after that, only the Korean term should be used.
  • The use of acronyms should be minimized. When an acronym is first used, it should be written in full with the acronym following in parentheses, e.g. "World Health Organization (WHO)."
  • Equipment, materials, and products used in the research should be described with the exact product name, the source company, and the city, state/province, and country of the source company, e.g. SPSS ver. 17 (SPSS, Inc., Chicago, IL, USA).

2. Language

Manuscripts must be written in Korean or English. If the article is written in Korean, the title and authors' names and affiliations must be written in both Korean and English. The corresponding author's contact information, abstract, keywords, tables, figure legends, references, and acknowledgments must all be written in English.

3. The Order of the Parts of the Manuscript

The manuscript should contain the following in this order: the title page, abstract, keywords, main text, acknowledgments, references, tables, and figures.

4. Title Page

Korean authors should submit all of the information on the title page in both Korean and English. International authors may submit the information in English only.

  • Article title: The title should be written as clearly and concisely as possible. The first letter of each of the words in the title should be capitalized except for articles (a/an/the), prepositions (to, for, etc.), andconjunctions (and, but, etc.).
  • Each author's name should be listed in order, followed the institutional affiliation. If the authors represent more than one institution, each author's name should be followed by superscript numbers in parentheses denoting their respective affiliations, and the numbered list of institutions should follow.
  • The corresponding author's name and affiliation should be given in a footnote on the title page, including the address, phone number, fax number, and e-mail address. For example:
    - Corresponding Author: Gil Dong Hong
    - Department of Child Welfare, Hanguk University, Address, Korea
    - Tel: +82-43-432-2259 , Fax: +82-43-432-2259, E-mail: gildong@ccu.edu
  • If the study was previously presented at a conference, this should be indicated, including the name and dates of the conference and its location.
  • I f the study was original submitted as a thesis or dissertation toward an academic degree, this should be indicated.

5. Abstract and Keywords

  • Manuscripts should include an abstract in English.
  • Abstracts should be 200-250 words long and should include the research purpose, methods, and key findings.
  • Three or four keywords should be listed in English after the abstract. Unless they are proper nouns, they should be in lowercase.

6. The Main Text

  • The body of the text should contain separate sections for the introduction, research methods, results, and discussion. Exceptions will be made for papers that do not follow an experimental form, such as theoretical papers and reviews of the literature.
  • Abstracts should be 200-250 words long and should include the research purpose, methods, and key findings.
  • References should be cited only where directly relevant to the content of the paper. The latest edition of sources should be cited. All citations must appear in the reference list, and likewise, all references in the list must be cited somewhere in the text. Citations in the main text should appear as follows:
    - Single author: Cho [3]
    - Two authors: Kim and Lee [10]
    - Three or more authors: Kim et al. [3]
    - Multiple citations together: [3, 6, 7]
  • Tables and figures should be cited in the main text as follows: Table 1; Tables 1, 2; Figures 1-3. These citations should appear in English regardless of the language of the main text.
  • Footnotes is not allowed anymore because of international editorial guidelines.

7. Acknowledgments

  • All persons who have made substantial contributions, but who have not met the criteria for authorship, should be acknowledged here.
  • All sources of funding for the study should be stated here explicitly (e.g., grants, use of laboratory equipment, sponsors, etc.).
  • Any relationship that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest should be listed.

8. References

  • All references should be listed in English in alphabetical order by the first author's family name, with no distinction between Korean and international articles.
  • For references with more than six authors, only the first six authors should be listed, followed by "et al."
