A Stduy on the Relationship between Social Network of Relationships and Children's Self-Perceived Competence

ABSTRACT
Relatively few studies have compared the characteristics of different kinds of relationships in children's social network and children's Self-Perceived Competence. In this study 180 fifth and sixth grade children completed Furman's Network of Relationships Inventory (NRI) and Harter's Self-Perception Profile For Children (SPPC) NRI assessed 11 qualities of their relationships with mother, father, siblings, relatives, friend and teacher. The data were analyzed by Frequencies. Percentiles, t-test, and Pearson's correlation. Major findings were as follows: 1. Statistically there were no sex differences in Self-Perceived Competence. 2. Boys got significantly higher scores than girls in Punishment from father and teacher Admiration Reliable Alliance from relatives among the Social Network of Relationships. 3. 1)Significant positive correlations between social Network of Relationships and Self-Perceived Competence for children were Followings-- Behavioral Conduct and Affection with father, Scholastic Competence Behavioral Conduct and Reliable Alliance with father, Social Acceptance Behavioral conduct Global Self-Worth and Reliable Aliance with mother, Global Self-Worth and Satisfaction with mother, physical Appearance and Companionship·Satisfection·Affection with teacher, Social Acceptance and Reliable Alliance with siblings, physical Appearance and Satisfaction·Reliabel Alliance with siblings, Behavioral Conduct and Instrumental Aid·Satisfaction·Affection·Reliable Alliance with siblings, Global Self- Worth and Satisfaction·Affection·Reliable Alliance with siblings. 2) Significant negative correlations between Social Network of Relationships and Self- perceived Competence for children were followings-- Global Self-Worth and Conflict with father, Scholastic Competence·Social Acceptance·Behavioral Conduct·Global Self-Worth and Confict with siblings. Global Self-Worth and Pumishmen from siblings
